Does whatever a Spider-Man Can! April 2, 2010

What can I really say? I'm a huge Spider-Man fan and if you're like me, all of the game's hiccups really gravitate a game that many will call sorta mediocre. With cameos like Luke Cage and Wolverine and the inclusion of putting the web slinger back in black, all I can say is this is fan service of the highest order. Is it a great game? Not quite but this is the best Spider-Man game in ages, my personel favorite next to the old Play Station game.
The developers put Spider-Man in the GTA sandbox gameplay again and here it's done much better than in the previous movie games. The side missions are still a bit repetitive but it's kinda cool saving citizens from harm and fighting several different styles of enemies when the city explodes with bedlam. Best of all, no red balloons!
Swinging around the city is really fun this time and the game is much bigger than Ultimate Spider-Man which was relatively short. The aerial combat is awesome and easily the best part of the game. Here you also get a new spin on things, the combat allows you to mix up combos by switching back and forth with the symbiote and the classic red and blue. Each style of play is unique and feels completely it's own.One problem is the value system which rates your good and bad deeds, save someone, it goes up, throw a car it goes down. The whole thing seemed really innovative but they really could have explored it much more.
Some problems are hard to overlook. Some missions have you repeating the same attack over a dozen times which gets really old after a while. The bosses are decent, you go toe to toe with wolverine, venom, and the vulture which is nice but they should have added some more. With all these symbiotes running around, where's carnage? The biggest problem I had with the game is almost a killer though, with all of the increasing chaos going on around the city, the framerate drops to a snails pace which is a real shame considering how pretty everything looks. Towards the end of the game I felt like I was watching a slide show and I'm not exaggerating at all, it nearly make the game almost unplayable.
All of that being said, when the game was firing on all cylinders I couldn't help but enjoy myself. The gameplay might be a bit of a button masher but cool moments like teaming up with Moon Knight and fighting Wolverine absorbed by a symbiote are excellent. The voice acting is well done and the story is just as ridiculous as it needs to be. All of the little nuances do so much to save this thing. This here is clearly a game meant for the fans and if you are one, you're in for a real treat.

I received this game for Christmas and have had a opportunity to play it thoroughly and acquire all four separate endings. For a Spider-Man game, this has to be one of the better games for the following reasons:
Immersive gameplay with excellent combat
Great Story with a hint of Originality
Good deal of Replay Value due to Multiple Endings
Excellent ensemble of supporting cast including Wolverine, Black Cat, Venom, Moon Knight, etc.
The ability to switch between Spider-Man and Symbiote Spider-Man and have different moves for each.
The ability to level up and learn new abilities throughout the game.
Auto-Save Feature
Excellent Voice Acting for each character.
However, there are things that could have definitely had some improvement which would have ultimately made the experience much better which include the following:
Issues with Freezing - I know I had the game freeze on many occasions (luckily there is an auto-save, which saves often)
Camera Issues - Sometimes the camera would stick in a particular spot while other times the camera would go towards a weird place, which would cause movement to be awkward.
Repetitive Missions/Too Many Collectibles - I like having a lot of side missions, but the side missions in this game because too much of a burden because they constantly repeated. For instance, there are missions where you save citizens. The first mission would have Spider-Man save 3 citizens. Once you save three, then you would have to save five, and so forth. It just became too much and really derailed from the enjoyment of the game. Additionally, the amount of collectibles in the game is over 2000, which can seriously take a significant amount of time.
Length of the Game - Without the repetitive missions nor the over 2000 collectibles, the game is only about 4 hours in length, which is really short for a game.
In the end, this game is still awesome. I highly recommend it for anybody that likes a solid action game with a good story to boot. If you enjoy treasure hunting and repetitive side quests, then this is also for you. Otherwise, I would probably stay away.

For some reason, this game didn't seem to stir up a lot of talk within the gaming community, and while it certainly didn't break any ground, it is a very solid platform game. As far as game-play and controls, this isn't a million miles away from the Spider-Man movie games that were made on the PS2/X-Box a few years back. It's definitely a step up though, in fact this might be the best Spider-Man game I've ever played! It has a cool story about the Venom symbiote taking over New York, not unlike a zombie apocalypse storyline. You'll see appearances from Black Cat, Kingpin, Moon Knight, Rhino, Cage, Electro, Vulture, Black Widow, Wolverine, Mary Jane, and of course Venom. The controls may seem chaotic at times, but overall they handle pretty well, and it's a lot of fun to upgrade Spidey's moves and watch him kick butt. The graphics are pretty nice, but not as sharp as more recent titles like "Batman: Arkham Asylum" (which kinda raised the bar on platform games). The fighting may also seem repetitive at times, but the storyline and fun factor will hold your interest. So aside from those small issues, it's a really solid release, and I highly recommend adding it to your collection if you're a fan of comics or adventure games.

Like other reviews of this game I've read, my major complaint is the ease with which you switch from red to black costumes. Half the time I don't mean too, then I have to deliberately think about changing back during the course of a fight. The graphics are better than other Spidey games, as are the controls, save the red/black switching. Overall, it's a really fun game.
