Great product, while it worked... December 4, 2008 I had loved this computer. I was trying to prepare a review, but I was waiting until I found at least one thing wrong with the unit. I finally found it: It died after about 2 weeks of mild use. Won't charge, won't power on, won't respond to anything. Waiting to see how acer handles the warranty coverage.
Overall, I absolutely LOVED this PC. Worked more than perfect before it died.
Best Laptop Value EVER December 4, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've had mine now for a couple weeks and I'm loving it. So many things to like about this computer:
Screen- I compared this to other netbooks, including Asus, HP and Dell, and this Aspire has got by far the brightest, crispest screen. I'm utterly amazed that Acer built this with LED backlighting (vs. traditional fluorescent lamps). Most desktop LED monitors are still selling for upwards of $1K.
It makes a huge difference. Super bright, very clear and best of all, LEDs last forever (for all practical purposes); certainly far longer than lamps.
Chassis- Surprisingly strong. No flex anywhere, feels good and solid. The glossy finish is a fingerprint magnet, but it sure looks sharp.
CPU- The 1.6Ghz Intel CPU is surprisingly powerful. I've installed and run Half-Life (the original) and, amazingly, even World of Warcraft (with both new expansions). Keep all quality settings at minimum and it's playable. The screen's too small to be practical for Photoshop, but the CPU can handle it just fine.
Keyboard- Again, a surprise. As notebook keyboards go, it feels pretty good. ESC and function keys are a little tiny, but doable.
Trackpad- Very sensitive and usable. I've heard complaints about the odd placement of the buttons on the sides of the pad, which is indeed awkward, but with the pad's tap-to-click functionality and the properties key (opposite the Windows key), I literally never use either pad button.
Ports- Three USB ports is great, and of course you can increase this with hubs if you want more. The single card reader that supports many formats is excellent. The VGA connector is good. DVI would have been better, and I've heard a rumor that Acer will be adding this to their next generation, but this is plenty for a netbook like this. More than I would expect. The system even supports dual monitors with this port, up to a resolution of 1600 x 1200 for the second screen (in 32-bit color), possibly higher.
Speakers- Nothing to write home about, no different than any other laptop. What can you expect from speakers the size of a dime? Just add externals or use headphones and it sounds great.
Hard Disk- NICE BONUS: We've bought three of these Aspires so far -- the 120gb / 3-cell models -- and EACH of them has come with a 160gb drive. Not sure what's up with this, but it's sure a nice surprise to actually get MORE than what I paid for. OEM drives are so cheap now that Acer must have just scrapped the 120s and silently started putting 160s in all units. (The drive reads as 149gb; wipe out the hidden recovery partition to recover about 5gb more.)
Software- This is the best part -- it runs XP! The relatively lower power of netbooks like this is a blessing in disguise. It's keeps you away from the toxic Windows Vista.
It comes with XP Home, but with an external CD-ROM drive and your disc of XP Pro, you can easily wipe out Home and install Pro. (Which I recommend; gets rid of all the junkware that's preinstalled and makes things nice and clean. Best yet, Acer provides all the drivers you need to make your Pro version run perfectly.)
Battery- This is the only blemish on this system. The 3-cell battery advertises 2.5 hours runtime under IDEAL conditions, which none of us are likely to experience. With WiFi and web browsing or game playing, it's more like an hour.
Workable for quick trips to the coffee shop, but keep the adapter handy at home and you'll be fine.
I very highly recommend this system, you won't be disappointed.
Weakness not documented in prior reviews. December 3, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
One weakness not previously discussed in these reviews is the fact that the wireless configuration does NOT give the option of connecting to a WPA ENTERPRISE protocol access point. You will not be able to connect to your typical college campus, large corporation, goverment, or typical healthcare type wireless networks with the current configuration out of the box.
Perfect for me December 3, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
So I just wanted to bring up a few points others didn't about this laptop. It takes 3.5 hours to charge the 6 cell battery from empty to full. The mouse is annoying as heck. If u plan on using this as a regular all day computer for God sake buy a mouse. Black casing collects fingerprint smudges big time.
Great little machine December 3, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I am the secretary for a few organizations and found that while trying to take minutes of meetings my handwriting left much to be desired. This little gem of a computer allows me to take great notes that I can read and also gives me the latitude of preparing for a meeting by having all my materials within the computer. And I am no longer surrounded by paper! What a great way to GO GREEN.
