| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com Baltimore-based bedroom electronic pop musician Dan Deacon has made a thrilling, buzzing little album that cagily mixes the throwaway with the epic. The record's centerpiece, a paean to Deacon's hometown called "Wham City," is so smartly constructed, anthemic, and lush, it makes Sufjan Stephens look like a confused, overreaching Boy Scout. While on the subject of comparisons, Deacon is repeatedly compared to Daniel Johnston in interviews. And sure, they both can display a love for whimsy and have been known to record using very inexpensive means, but Johnson seems to have such a wellspring of confusion and fear that he's working from. There's a euphoric thrill to Deacon's squeaky, looped-out music. The opening tune "Woody Woodpecker" piles so many chintzy and cheesy elements together it should be the most annoying thing ever. But it's expertly crafted and kaleidoscopic, and it will only annoy people who hate fun. You should take this song, or the entire album, with you on a first date with you and play it for that person. If they do not like it, you should never date them again, even if they are very rich. --Mike McGonigal

A Trippy Musical Compilation May 29, 2010 tvtv3 (Sorento, IL United States) I picked up SPIDER MAN OF THE RINGS after reading an interview with the artist, Dan Deacon, in a local newspaper. I found what he said about music to be quite interesting and I was curious to check out his the style of music he was creating. What a trip!
I'm not sure how to describe the songs found on here. The overall feel of the tunes is one of an electronic techno vibe sped up on crack and mixed in with a bunch of pop-culture leftovers.
The first track on the album, "Woody Woodpecker" is a bit annoying, especially since it contains a constant repeat of Woody Woodpecker's laugh over and over and over again. The song initially comes off as irritating, but then it quickly grows on you. Which is pretty much what the album does as a whole.
The big number on the album is "Wham City", a song that goes on for over 12 minutes. There's the same electronic techno vibe here, but it's hashed perfectly with a whimsy folk vibe including a chorus of what sounds like a bunch of chipmunks on speed singing about a mountain of snow where a fountain of gold flows and something about a giant bear.
The two other tunes that are of the most interest are " Snake Mistakes" and "Pink Batman".
The first time I listed to SPIDER MAN OF THE RINGS I hated it. It made no sense to me and I really don't like techno music. However, I gave the album another chance and listened to it again. A couple of the tunes started to grow on me. The music is definitely some of the most unusual I've ever listened to, but all of the songs have a great child-like feeling to them. Yet, it is this very eccentricity that is the album's greatest fault. Most people I know aren't going to give something like SPIDER MAN OF THE RINGS more than one listen and they'll be so turned off that they'll never even listen to anything like it again. Of those who would give it a chance, the music here is so different an unusual that it has a very limited appeal. Nevertheless, I admire Dan Deacon for creating something new hope he continues exploring at the forefront of the musical frontiers.
Explosive. June 23, 2009 P. Erdmann (USA, Mostly.) Think of a thousand best things you've ever experienced, and tightly pack them all in a tiny box. Then flick the box with your finger. The explosion is this album. Thank you, Dan.

I used to think I was kinda nuts; then I heard this. It was on one of those Best of 2007 lists in a free weekly, so I took a chance and bought it. It arrived and I played it all the way through without stopping: an act of sheer will. Then I played it for my 6 yr old who promptly started cursing, spitting up blood and came at me with scissors - I turned it off. Then I recently pulled it out again to listen to, just to see if it was still unbearable and it just wore me down: I finally got it: stop making sense. Now I play it all the time, I guess that's a good thing...
There Is A Mountain of Snow! February 11, 2008 L. Lambert (Memphis TN) "There is a mountain of snow, up past the big glen. We have a castle enclosed. There is a fountain. Out of the fountain flows gold into a huge hand. That hand's held by a bear, who has a sick band of: goats, and cats, and pigs, and bats...with brooms and bats and wings and rats, and play big dogs like queens and kings and everyone plays drums and sings...bout big sharks, sharp swords, beast bees, bead lords, sweet cakes, mace lakes...O ma ma ma ma ma ma ma ma......" If you think the aforementioned Wham City lyrics are a bit off the beaten path, wait till you hear Snake Mistakes. I would recommend this CD to anyone who likes music a bit to the left (or right depending on preference) of center. A guaranteed smile almost on every track.
Ridiculously rad January 30, 2008 Casey Hannam 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
If you are really serious and only listen to really serious music then you will not enjoy this album. This cd makes you want to jump around and dance like a 3rd grader. I'm not going to write a review that sounds like I think I work for Pitchfork or anything because I don't. If you like having a smile on your face buy this album.
