Amazon.com Tori Amos's first concert-length live DVD, Welcome to Sunny Florida, is a riveting showcase for the artist's formidable vocal and instrumental chops and preciously off-kilter pop music. Taped on a wet day in September 2003 at West Palm Beach (the final stop on Amos's Lottapianos tour), the show was well performed, stunningly recorded, and lusciously lensed, if too frantically cut. Session ace Matt Chamberlain on drums and the nimble-fingered Jon Evans on bass provide just enough firepower to flesh out Amos's moody micro-epics while leaving sufficient space to keep her voice and keyboards the focus of our attention. Most songs feature brilliantly reworked arrangements, and the band uses the venue's acoustics to heighten the music's magic. Amos, a vital 40, enjoys a reputation as a great live act, and it's easy to see why as she loses herself in song, head thrown back, one hand on the keys of her Bösendorfer grand and the other on an accompanying Wurlitzer. Be warned: "Professional Widow" suffers from repeated vocal muting on potentially offensive words, which happens to wreck the effect of this particular song. ("Precious Things" is, thankfully, intact.) The DVD comes with a 6-track CD, Scarlet's Hidden Treasures (a reference to Amos' 2002 Scarlet's Walk album), which includes in its 33 minutes a studio version of "Tombigbee," the first encore from the Florida show. --Michael Mikesell

Tori's Sunny Florida February 2, 2010 Ashley D. Jones 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
A 'must have' for Tori fans. Augmented by long time musicians, Matt Chamberlain and Jon Edwards, this concert filmed on the last night of the year long "Scarlet's Walk Tour" shows Tori at her finest. The set list is impeccable with a mix of fine new selections and beefed up and fresh arrangements of older classics. The bonus cd tracks are great and the bonus dvd interviews are a warm and engaging insight into this prolific and provocative artist. Completely worth it.
pretty good! October 15, 2009 Melody N. Pilotte (San Francisco) This is a concert DVD of Tori's last performance on the Scarlet Walk tour, only it is not the full show. Her voice is not as great as it could be because it IS the last show of a two year tour. Footage of fans is a mix between disturbing and funny--some are nuts and others are really genuine in their Tori love. The show itself has some of the best versions of performances. She has a lot of energy as a performer that does and doesn't translate on film. Still, the behind the scenes stuff is funny, and her interview with her mother is adorable. Also, the bonus EP that comes with the dvd is worth buying the whole dvd for! Scarlet's Hidden Treasures are just that! Apollo's Frock, Seaside and Tombigbee are incredible. Even if you're just Tori-curious, I would say go ahead and get this. ;)
I wasnt too impressed with the USA version... March 13, 2009 Mark C. (Seattle, WA United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
But this looks like different (cuts)? I got rid of mine-but I still have FADE TO RED which is A+
at any rate-you need a PAL R2 converting player-these can be had for $50(no!) to $200 (yes) in the midrange players-Most of them you can transform with the remote-IF you know the codes-which you can find on the all region sites
In Europe they are not easily shocked-theyve seen it all before-for many centuries
And they appreciate encentric jeanni ous-es.(sic)
So the songs may not be censored -some are selling it for under $10-but being 16x9 enhanced widescreen would be nice
I am very new/late to the TA party-and I feel as if Ive arrived too long after it has started-but after all these years, the two discs I had I merely tossed on in the background-with no real imprint. Then I downloaded the Live in Chicago 2007 'bootleg', and then it all hit me-hard. CFG i have always liked-and this surpassed that like crazy
Some things sound better studio-PRECIOUS THINGS, CORNFLAKE GIRL, GOD; Some MUCH better live-WAITRESS-left me stunned-and the dark version of ME AND A GUN among others. Her technical command of the piano is marvelous-but it is incredibly filled with Tori and her energy and soul. The original piano arrangements can be heard more clearly-and less diluted on studio pieces-and the added detail-not feasible live-she just chops it all out-as her gusto was also palpable on the live recordings
I listened to ADP-it went in one ear and out the other-as I thought-oops the genius has finally gone over the top and now coasting; And little did I know that i love the live versions of the same songs of much of that album
The ferocious energy in which she tackles THESE PRECIOUS THINGS (studio)is mind boggleing -the piano arrangements/motif are mind boggling; She infuses an almost classical music kinetic into it-and the hyperventilating----
So ive missed out on 15 years of musical genius; I hate using hyperbole-but when a piece(s) of music comes on that sends chill through your being-and you quickly learn to anticipate each note-that says it all for me.
I get lost in much of her music and think she has accomplished her mission-to touch people with her vision, emotions and the- more unnameable things
I NEVER in a million years knew she had such a [potty mouth].
As Pip in Chicago-she could make a Trooper blush.
I had NO idea-just thought she was a regular sweet-raised-on cornbread-and-greens girl from Virginia
Her early life sounds very discouraging and disturbing-with that I can empathize-much- as well her strength and creative beauty. Her ability to push onward marvels me
Any girl that can roll in the mud, jump at her peril into a cold river-and be in heels and leather the next day, I say-(...!)
Just saw a pic of the imp laying on the ground-99% of the nine inch nail girly girls would not be caught dead doing-plus with a large tree in her crotch-(of which 105% of them would never be caught dead...)-she needed longer legs or a smaller tree-
almost had me spit coffee on the screen;
Three stars for the US version of this-which I had-and one more- just for her being her....
To think of the many times I could have seen her here live-and didnt -
On some of the vids on FTR-where she finishes facing the camera-she does something odd-she shines-energy comes up through her face up outward and -I really dont know how to put it -like she is kissing you with her eyes-00
Tori is a Musical Genius January 4, 2009 BlackDove (Southern California) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I just watched this DVD for the first time, I wasn't aware it was out there even though I have been a tori fan for over ten years. I loved and was drawn in by her performance on this DVD and the interviews were a great personal look into her behind the stage. I have seen her in concert recently and she still takes you to places you cant describe. The one thing I would love to ask her if I ever met her is why "Professional Widow" is censored. I was not happy about this at all. But other than that it is a must have for any avid Tori fan.
A Superb Concert Video March 29, 2008 Indiana Jeff Reynolds (Indianapolis, IN USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I am too much of a Christian to be completely comfortable with Tori Amos either lyrically or how she comes across in concert. I am too much of an artist not to be a Tori Amos fan.
This concert video added to it. One reviewer complained that it was the final concert of the Scarlet's Walk Tour. So would you have preferred a different concert from that tour or a different tour? I saw a list of bootleg tapes (or videos) from her Beekeeper tour, and realized that the song list varies for her from concert to concert. (Nothing irritates me more than going to two concerts by the same artist on the same tour and knowing in advance what the song order is, or to realize that if I didn't hear my favorite song from album X when the artist is promoting album X, I won't ever hear that song live.)
I enjoyed that she played around with the songs, not just trying to recapture the sound of the original album. Different artists have different philosophies of this (Hall and Oates share Ms. Amos' approach; Styx wants to make be as close to the original as possible; Phil Keaggy realizes which leads are ones people expect to be performed, but has variation otherwise). I especially enjoyed the prolonged start of "Crucify".
This DVD includes a live interview with both Tori and her mother. There are segments of the interview shown in the concert video, which I liked -- it helped keep the video interesting.
Also included is the CD of "Scarlet's Hidden Treasures." Is it good? It's Tori -- what do you expect?!
